    This Week's Quote

I knew I was outspoken when I was a kid because, whenever my parents had company coming over, they would pay me to leave. "Go see your grandmother. Get out of here." That was my first paying gig.

    Which Way the Wind Blows

In a national referendum yesterday, Cubans approved a new "family law" code that will allow gay couples to marry, and to adopt children.

These changes faced opposition from Cuba's growing evangelical movement.

Which guarantees, as Hurricane Ian nears the island nation, that some local fundamentalist firebrand will claim the storm damage is God's wrath for the vote. What's Spanish for "Hey, it works for Graham and Robertson, doesn't it?"

    Gay vs. Gay

Democrat Robert Zimmerman and Republican George Santos are battling for the seat in New York's 3rd Congressional District. One thing is clear:  Whoever wins, the seat will be occupied by a gay man.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in American history, two out LGBTQ congressional candidates are facing off in a general election.

"It was going to happen sooner or later," Donald Haider-Markel, a University of Kansas political science professor, told NBC News. "The question was always finding an LGBTQ Republican who can get support in a primary."

The question was always finding an LGBTQ Republican, full stop.

Santos supports Donald Trump, opposes abortion rights and backs Florida's Don't Say Gay law.

Somebody contact headquarters. This boy's gay card needs to be revoked.

    Morning Musings

Each morning I spend a large part of my Seattle commute on Aurora Avenue, driving past fast food places, motels, car dealers and prostitutes.

The latter wave sometimes, which leads me to wonder how they would react to a car pulling over and the driver turning out to be female. Would the hooker balk? Or be relieved that she's unlikely to get beaten up? Are there women, lesbian or otherwise, who patronize female prostitutes?

I guess the only way to get answers would be to pull over and ask. And with my luck, that's the moment my boss would drive by.

    Crash the Party

The Advocate reports that a tractor trailer and a box truck collided this week on I-40 on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. The semi rolled over, and disgorged its contents:  sex toys.

Dildos, lube and vibrators littered the highway, closing the off-ramp for hours.

The Advocate couldn't resist the photo caption, "The tractor trailer lost its load prematurely while on delivery in Oklahoma."

"Where the rubber meets the road," offered one Twitter user. "Call  the Department of Boneland Security," joked another.

I love that this happened in the Bible Belt. Apparently a sizable number of Oklahomans are vibrating for Jesus.

I can think of no other person on this planet who should have LESS input about what a woman chooses to do with her body than Lindsay Graham.

    Marathon Men, Women and Others

The host of the Boston Marathon, the Boston Athletic Association, announced today that non-binary runners won't have to register in the men's or women's division for next April's race. Instead, they'll be able to choose a non-binary option.

I'm pleased that the BAA is boosting inclusivity.

But I'm afraid the BAA's inclusivity will never stretch to the sort of person I am, namely the sort who would count herself lucky to complete the course in a blistering three weeks.

    Occupational Hazard

I want to acknowledge the passing today of Queen Elizabeth II, since she was a worldwide figure for so long and I held her in some esteem.

But I swear to God, every sentence I come up with using the word "queen" sounds gayer than the next.
